I remember when I first wrote To Hold You Like Him, I was playing it in my room, belting the heart wrenching chorus at the top of my lungs. Then, after the song finished, my younger brother started cheering in the other room, “Ya! Way to end on a banger!” I said, “I wrote that song!” And he was blown away.
That’s when I knew I had written a hit.
This song came into fruition a year before I had actually written it when I had been invited to my best friend’s wedding. A year out, I already started thinking about this song because I knew I would be seeing an ex-girlfriend at the wedding.
Things didn’t end well between us. I will let you listen to this song and a few of my others to put the pieces together for yourself of what happened. And I never saw her since we had broken up. But I did know she started dating a guy right after me who she had told me was bad news, and they were engaged at the time, now married.
So the whole year I kept wondering what it would be like to see an ex-girlfriend after a breakup. I’ve never had this experience before. And let me tell you, it wasn’t as bad as I had thought. Actually, it was a wonderful experience.
We gave each other a big hug and said, “It’s nice to see you.” But I could feel we both actually meant those words. It’s nice knowing people can move on and forgive each other for bad things that had happened in the past. I felt like I had grown into a better man because of it.
After the wedding, I wrote the chorus to this song on my drive home. It just popped into my head. And the rest came together naturally. It will definitely make you feel the feels. Enjoy it!
