This is one of my favorite guitar riffs I’ve ever written—and the best part is, it came to me naturally. One evening, I randomly started playing this intro riff, and my goal was to create a more upbeat song. I instantly resonated with it, so I started thinking about lyrics. That’s how my new track, “Driveway Memories”, was born.
Writing Driveway Memories After Moving Home
At the time, I had just moved back home with my parents for the first time in years after losing my job. Being back in that space resurfaced old emotions and memories—especially of an ex-girlfriend.
One evening, I was out on a walk with this new song stuck in my head. As I passed my driveway, I noticed the exact spot where I last saw her. That one place that would change my life forever. It took me straight back to that October weekend.
The Last Goodbye in the Driveway
I didn’t know it then, but that weekend would be our last together. We were both back from college break. Things had already grown shaky after trying to maintain a long-distance relationship. She had just started her first year of college in Pennsylvania, and I was in year two at a school in Virginia.
That weekend brought us closer, but it also showed how much life had changed—and how much we had changed. We’d started dating my senior year of high school, and this was the first time I realized that life can drift people apart.
We had just finished watching Hoodwinked Too (yes, the schnitzel song still cracks me up). I walked her to her car, parked in its usual spot at the end of my driveway. We said a painful farewell before returning to school. I kissed her goodbye and watched her drive away.
Two weeks later, she called to tell me she had canceled her flight to see me for our two-year anniversary. That memory of her driving away is still burned into my mind—and inspired this song.
Storytelling and Pop Culture in My Lyrics
I’ve always loved storytelling through music, and “Driveway Memories” is no exception. The upbeat guitar riff gives it a lively feel, but of course, I couldn’t escape writing hopelessly romantic lyrics. Many fans tell me they love when I slip in pop culture references, so I had to include Hoodwinked Too in the song.
In the end, “Driveway Memories” became both upbeat and nostalgic—a blend of youthful energy and bittersweet reflection.
I hope you enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed writing it.
