“Jahrys refused to believe that their story simply ended.”

My favorite part about rereading my series is seeing how much everything has developed since writing Book One back in 2016. And this quote from Junkland shows exactly that.

Book One was originally meant to be a standalone. But one day, tubing down the river in Harpers Ferry, the idea for a full series popped into my head.

By then, I was already close to finishing Book One. I had a few loose ideas for where things could go, but honestly, I was mostly winging it as I went.

So seeing a line like this now—one that hints at Jahrys refusing to believe a certain character’s story has truly ended—sends shivers down my spine.

Because I subconsciously wrote that.

And then ended up fully developing it in Book Three without even remembering this line existed.

I was nervous to reread this book, unsure how it would hold up after so many years of growth and revision. But I keep finding moments like this—small, unexpected surprises that prove how deeply these books speak to one another.

Not bad for winging it across ten years of writing this series.

It’s strange, and kind of beautiful, to watch a story grow up alongside you.
